Dear Readers,
I’m promoting Red Flag Laws for Louisiana. Also known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), they temporarily remove firearms from individuals. These individuals are deemed a danger to themselves or others. Nationally, there is an increasing usage of ERPOs (up 59% in 2023). Statistics show Red Flag laws are also effective in averting suicides (e.g.,1 life saved per 17- 23 ERPOs).
Common reasons for ERPOs include threats of violence or suicidal ideation. Final orders are granted in over three-quarters of cases. This demonstrates their use is a crucial tool for families and law enforcement to intervene in a crisis.
Louisiana has consistently had one of the highest gun death rates in the U.S., often ranking 2nd or 3rd in the nation. In an average year, over 1,200 people die by guns in the state. Homicides make up a larger percentage of gun deaths than the national average.
Presently, SB211 is being considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will allow courts to issue ERPOs in Louisiana. This amendment is crucial for Louisiana to decrease gun death rates.
Promoting Red Flag Laws for Louisiana
As a U.S. Senator for Louisiana, I will vote in favor of Bills like SB211 to allow courts to issue ERPOs. The amendment is presently pending Senate Judiciary C since 5/13/25. I’m urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to pass this Bill.
